A Victorian Eye
Jermyn Street Theatre
Reviewed on Wednesday 31st August 2013

Nigel Dunbar plays William Blake Richmond in this gruelling one man play at the Jermyn Street Theatre, one of my favourite fringe venues. Unfortunately, unless you have studied and/or have a strong interest in Victorian History, A Victorian Eye is a very dull play.
While Nigel Dunbar's characterisation is effective, he takes few risks and we see little character development, I struggled to remain engaged. Rory Fellowes' writing seems to dwell too much on certain moments and could move forward more quickly on several occasions. Thankfully Tim Dann's design is outstanding, the detail and positioning of every single piece of clutter makes this production of A Victorian Eye extremely atmospheric.
One hour and twenty minutes with no interval is a long time to watch one man on stage, in fact it felt much longer. Nigel Dunbar is clearly a talented actor but struggles without someone to bounce off. Quite simply, if you have a strong interest in Victorian History, A Victorian Eye will provide a delightfully insightful evening at the theatre, otherwise seeing the show would be a waste of your time.
