Interview: Sarah Galbraith, starring in [title of show] at the Landor Theatre

Sarah Galbraith is currently starring as Susan in the London premiere of [title of show] at the Landor Theatre. She most recently starred as Florence in the London revival of Chess which enjoyed a sold out run at the Union Theatre.

Originally from the USA, Sarah has performed in all three US productions of The Phantom of the Opera. She was a Swing in the Broadway Production, understudied Madame Giry in the US National Tour and understudied Christine in the Las Vegas Production.

Sarah’s other theatre credits include Rita in Steel Pier at the Union Theatre, Johanna in Sweeney Todd at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Carrie in the US Tour of Carousel and Ariel in a Japanese concert tour of The Little Mermaid. She recently performed in The Night of 1000 Voices at the Royal Albert Hall.

I recently spoke to Sarah about what audiences can expect from [title of show], her time in Chess and what roles she has her eye on...

How does it feel to be starring in the London premiere of [title of show]?
Amazing! All we’ve done is laugh, so far the whole experience has been so much fun! We started rehearsals by working on the music because the score sounds simpler than it actually is. It’s quite intricate music and harmonies so we had to buckle down and really work on it.

What can people expect from the music?
I would say there are elements of standard musical theatre, some songs are a bit poppy and bluesy – there’s a whole range of stuff. No song sounds out of place.

The cast of [title of show]

How would you sum up the show?
Oh my goodness, how can I put this?

It’s about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical, have I got that right?
Yes, exactly! It has such a charm factor because you are watching these people writing a musical about their own experience. On paper you think ‘how is this going to work’ but when you see the show come to life it’s brilliant. It’s all about the characters’ love of theatre and the show they are writing and pursuing their dream.

What’s it like being part of such a small cast?
It’s fantastic! Sophia (Ragavelas) and I had previously met at a gig and just giggled and giggled the whole time, we were like two peas in a pod! We had no idea that we were both auditioning for this show so when we found out that we were going to be working together I think we both squealed! The boys are hysterical, everyone is very professional and has been in amazing West End shows. It’s a great ensemble piece so everybody gets to work together equally.

You recently starred in Chess at the Union which is also an intimate theatre, like the Landor. What is it like performing in such an intimate space?
The difference between Chess and [title of show] is that Chess could have easily transferred into a much bigger theatre and would have still worked, whereas every aspect of [title of show] is very intimate and it needs to be performed in a small theatre like the Landor! The audience will almost feel as if they are sitting in, watching the entire writing process, compared to sitting back and watching a big scale musical.

Sarah in Chess at the Union Theatre

Chess was such a huge success, what was it like to be part of the show?
To date it has been my best theatrical experience. What Chris Howell did with the piece is just incredible. He wanted us to approach it with an emotional understanding of each character and there was not a single sentence that anybody said or sang in the show which they didn’t fully understand. I got so stuck in and I will never forget the experience.

Looking ahead, what other roles would you like to play?
I would love to be in Newsies, I think it’s transferring soon! I would also love to play Ellen in Miss Saigon or The Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. I’ve said this before, but I really want The Secret Garden to return to the West End, partly because I adore the role of Martha.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding [title of show], how does it feel to have so much support behind you?
It’s incredible! The theatre community and the fans over here are unlike anything I ever experienced in the States! Everyone seems to be genuinely excited to see what projects you do next. When the casting press release went out for [title of show] Twitter exploded and all four of us in the cast were so honoured, thrilled and excited. We really want to give back and thank people for their support so we are doing lots of backstage videos and pictures to keep people in the loop!
