On Monday evening Gloria Onitiri, who was recently nominated for West End Frame's Understudy of the Year Award, took over the role of Rachel Marron in the West End production of The Bodyguard full time. She will play the role, which was originated in the West End by Heather Headley, until Saturday 7th September when multi award-winning recording artist Beverley Knight takes over.
Gloria was previously alternating the role. Her other theatre credits include: Sheila in Takeaway (Theatre Royal Stratford East), Arion in Cressida Brown’s Amphibians (Bridewell Theatre), Nala in Disney's The Lion King (Lyceum Theatre) and understudy Mrs Thistletwat, Girl Bear, Kate, Lucy and Gary Coleman in Avenue Q (Noël Coward Theatre).
Understudy Of The Year ran as part of the 2013 West End Frame Awards between May and June. The award was won by Ashley Day who understudies the role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon. Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros film, Thea Sharrock’s production of The Bodyguard premiered at the Adelphi Theatre in December 2012 and is currently booking until 8th March 2014.
