Weekly review round-up: Five stars for The Color Purple

Catch up with West End Frame's latest reviews...

The Color Purple
at the Menier Chocolate Factory until 14th September 2013

Rating: ★★★★★

"Abuse, violence and rape. British audiences are known for being reserved. The Menier Chocolate Factory may be small, but last night audience members were left with throbbing hands, saw throats and aching feet. John Doyle's direction and set design make this production extremely special. Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray's music and lyrics unleash so many layers to the characters. I will most certainly be making a return trip, and I sincerely hope that you will also witness this life changing piece of theatre." West End Frame's Andrew Tomlins. Click here to read the review.

Dirty Dancing
at the Piccadilly Theatre until 22nd February 2014

Rating: ★★★

"Dirty Dancing is a show which needs no introduction. The main problem with the stage version of Dirty Dancing is that it literally is the film on stage. Not one risk has been taken and it just does not work. The cast are absolutely incredible and keep the show alive. The dancing is mesmerising and performed to the highest standard possible. Stephen Brimson Lewis' set design is unimaginative. Dirty Dancing is a bunch of incredibly talented performers reenacting a film with a great band and a poor design. However, if you are looking to see a big West End musical, there are so many better options than Dirty Dancing. Personally I preferred Viva Forever!" West End Frame's Andrew Tomlins. Click here to read the review.

The Rocky Horror Show
UK Tour

Rating: ★★★★★

"The Rocky Horror Show always provides a night to remember. This 40th anniversary production continues to push boundaries and break rules, there is nothing else like it! The whole company seem to love every minute and are perfectly cast in their roles. Both acts are under an hour so the evening goes by in a flash. The Rocky Horror Show provides an electrifying and unforgettable evening at the theatre. Richard O'Brien's unique show will always remain a timeless classic, there is something strangely liberating about doing The Time Warp in a packed theatre full of men dressed in corsets! I wish every evening at the theatre could be as exciting." West End Frame's Andrew Tomlins. Click here to read the review.

Momentous Musicals
UK Tour

Rating: ★★★★

"Four West End stars, four recent drama school graduates and a mixture of songs from musicals old and new. Momentous Musicals provides a glorious evening of entertainment for any lover of musical theatre. Ex-Elphaba standby Ashleigh Gray is the star of the show, dazzling the audience with her powerhouse vocals. It was great to see four recent drama school graduates perform as part of the ensemble. However, during the opening number 'One Night Only' the four looked a little unsure as to what they were meant to be doing and seemed to look at each other for guidance while performing the unimaginative choreography. For what it is, Momentous Musicals is a great opportunity to see some very talented performers sharing a (sweaty) stage and singing some great show tunes. Momentous Musicals felt a little under rehearsed and frantic in places, but I expect this will improve as the tour continues, visiting Torquay, Bradford and Manchester."
