Review: RIP at the King's Head Theatre

Who was Jack the Ripper? RIP is an intriguing, new piece of theatre which sees five of the historical killer's victims witness their own post-mortems and desperately wait for justice to prevail. While this synopsis sounds a little dismal, surprisingly a few of the musical numbers are up tempo and catchy - I couldn't get the melodies out of my head!

It is always exciting to see new writing performed because you never know what to expect. RIP still needs further development to make it stand out as a strong, solid piece of theatre, but it definitely has potential. Certain aspects of the production feel a little amateurish and not all the cast are as strong as each other. The harmonies were impressive although certain solo performances were weak.

I didn't find all the characters believable. The running time is short but I wish more time was taken to delve even further into the past of each character. I am excited to see what the future holds for RIP. The show would work perfectly at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and I am sure its run at the King's Head will prove hugely beneficial.
