Being Tommy Cooper is an interesting piece of theatre which gives an insight into one of the most famous men in comedy. While many will remember Tommy Cooper for his hilarious stand-up routines and clever magic tricks, few will know the extent of the troubles which he faced off-stage. Being Tommy Cooper goes behind the scenes, looking into Tommy's rise to fame and the relationships with his agent Miff Ferrie, his mistress Mary Kay and, of course, with alcohol.
The play gets off to a dull start but all that changes as soon as Damian Williams steps into the spotlight to perform Tommy's first stage performance. Damian's portrayal of Tommy Cooper is incredible. Instead of imitating the star he gives a detailed performance, paying particular attention to small mannerisms. Do not be fooled, Being Tommy Cooper is a serious play with a story to tell, it is nothing like a tribute show.
My favourite scenes were those which re-enacted a few of Tommy Cooper's famous stage performances. On paper the script would seem silly so the delivery is vital and Damian most certainly pulls it off. I wish there were more of these scenes as the sections which explore Tommy's private life became a little slow-moving and boring.
Tommy Cooper fans must ensure they catch this tour! Otherwise if you're looking for a high quality, thought-provoking and gripping piece of theatre I would look elsewhere. Being Tommy Cooper provides an enjoyable evening at the theatre, however at the moment competition is fierce as there are countless shows touring the UK - many of which are more exciting, captivating productions.
