Buerk! The Newsical is created by Tom Bailey and Greg Jameson. The show follows newsreader Michael Buerk and takes a fictional look back to the 80s reimagining Buerk’s career at the BBC. I was expecting Buerk! The Newsical to be a witty satire set in 80's Britain but this couldn't be further from the truth. Buerk is a very bad piece of theatre which feels unfinished.
As well as co-writing the show, Tom Bailey also directed this production. Perhaps he became a little too consumed and failed to notice the non-clarity of the piece. There is no clear storyline, the sound is absolutely awful and the cast looked as if this was the first time they had ever been on-stage. The singing was a little painful.
Within seconds Buerk feels like an amateur production. The musical features many cheap jokes, cliché lyrics and I still can't get over the non-existing storyline. Buerk needs a huge amount of work, otherwise it should just be forgotten about. Many people walked out during the interval which is a strong signal that the show is a complete flop. I made the decision to stay until the end... which I greatly regretted.
Buerk is a brave creation which takes risks, but sadly they do not pay off.
