Charlie and the Chocolate Factory cancels first two previews due to "unforeseen problems"

It has been announced that the first two previews of Sam Mendes' highly anticipated production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have been cancelled.

Previews were due to begin at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on 17th May but the performances on 17th and 18th May have been cancelled. Instead an additional preview has been added on 22nd May and another extra performance will be added during the forthcoming holiday period.

A press statement says "Unforeseen problems in the delivery of a piece of stage engineering by a contractor have caused delays to the schedule. The whole production team is frustrated by this unforeseen delay in what has otherwise been a very smooth and exciting rehearsal period."

Douglas Hodge stars as Willy Wonka with Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe, Clive Carter as Mr Salt, Jasna Ivir as Mrs Gloop, Paul J Medford as Mr Beauregarde, Iris Roberts as Mrs Teavee and Myra Sands as Grandma Georgina.
