Album Review: Momentous Musicals recorded live at the New Wimbledon Theatre

Momentous Musicals
Recorded live at the New Wimbledon Theatre
Speckulation Entertainment

Following a highly successful performance at the New Wimbledon Theatre last year, Speckulation Entertainment have released a live recording of Momentous Musicals which is set to return for its first ever UK Tour later this year. The album is a must have for musical theatre fans as it features a wide variety of songs from both new and classic musicals, performed by some incredibly talented West End stars.

The album begins with Rachel Wooding giving a lively performance of One Night Only from Dreamgirls, you can hear the crowd applauding which surprisingly I did not find too irritating, instead it is quite atmospheric. Without a shadow of a doubt Rachel is the star of the show demonstrating incredible versatility. Her performance of You Must Love Me from  Evita is so simple and pure, So Much Better from Legally Blonde is fierce and No One But You from We Will Rock You is emotive and powerful.

Gareth Gates proves he is not just 'celeb casting'. His performances of Close Every Door from Joseph, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Misérables and Why, God Why? from Miss Saigon show off his smooth vocal tone, Gareth seems to tackle each song effortlessly.

The rest of the cast are also strong. Emma Williams' rendition of Hushabye Mountain is beautiful while I loved listening to her growl her way through Mein Herr from Cabaret, the build up of the song is quite spectacular! As always Daniel Boys shines and I felt exhausted just listening to Jonathan Ansell's performance of Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Sometimes musical theatre compilation albums can run the risk of being incredibly cheesy but thankfully the concept of Momentous Musicals is good. The talented cast perform with experience and the live album captures the atmosphere from the New Wimbledon Theatre nicely. If you love musicals old and new I would highly recommend this album and watch out for the tour which is visiting Wimbledon, Torquay, Bradford and Manchester in July.
