Matilda receives 12 Tony Award nominations!

Tim Minchin's musical Matilda has received twelve Tony Award nomination. The show, which opened to rave reviews at New York's Shubert Theatre since April, is adapted from Roald Dahl's 1988 novel about a bookish girl with magical powers. The nominations were announced earlier, Kinky Boots which is adapted from the hit British comedy film received 13 nominations.

Matilda's nominations include Best Musical, Best Direction (Matthew Warchus) and Best Score (Tim Minchin), while British cast members Bertie Carvel and Lauren Ward, who both originated with the show at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010, also made the shortlists. Its four US child stars also made the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre list.

Kinky Boots, about a British shoe factory that begins manufacturing fetish footwear, features an original score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, both of whom are nominated. Other Brits in the shortlists include actor Tom Sturridge, who goes head to head with stars including Tom Hanks and Nathan Lane in the Best Actor category for his role opposite Alec Baldwin in Lyle Kessler's Orphans, and Soutra Gilmour, nominated for Best Costume Design for Cyrano de Bergerac.

Elsewhere, other heavily nominated shows include Pippin (10), Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella (9) and Bartlett Sher's revival of Clifford Odets' play Golden Boy (8). Winners of the 67th annual Tony Awards will be announced at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday 9th June 2013.
