Following the sold-out success of Chess, The Union Theatre has graced us with the British Premiere of Darling Of The Day. The show tells the story of one man Priam Farll who is a famous artist in the early 1900's but hates the pressure of celebrity culture. When his butler Henry Leak dies and the doctor mistakes the body as Priam Farll, Priam jumps on the chance to be an average Joe again.
The Union Theatre is tiny and makes you feel as if you are in some sort of old Victorian cellar. This production is a very minimalistic adaptation. There is little set and even fewer props, but it works quite nicely and the transitions between scenes are quick and flawless.
The show has been cast well. James Dinsmore gives a huge stand out performance as Priam Farll. Strong performances also came from Dan Looney, Katy Secombe and Matthew Rowland who were all brilliant.
My favourite element of Darling Of The Day has to be the show's score which is delightful along with Matt Flint's strong choreography. The song Not On Your Nellie was simply amazing, I could easily see it on a West End stage.
Darling Of The Day not only has heart and humour but is good fun all round. If you like a good musical and want to see a show which guarantees to have you singing the songs on the way home then this is the show for you.
