“Awesome!” said my daughter. “Wow, that good?” I responded. “Well, that’s how I describe everything I like” she replied. When asked who had seen the CBBC show 'Help! My Supply Teacher is Magic' hands flung enthusiastically into the air and my daughter beamed knowingly as she too has watched the show and was clearly on first name terms with the magicians!
My daughter explained to me that when you want to know if children really like something, look for smiles and listen for laughter. As I scanned the audience there were lots of smiling children, some very relaxed looking parents and a fair amount of laughter.
From the opening Dancing 'Gangnam Style' Hanky – I found myself turning to my daughter at one point and saying “How did they do that?” – there were either magic tricks or laughter, the jokes being pretty much led by John Archer (certainly living up to his “Comedy Magician” title). Even Duncan, the audience participant, was laughing at the very one-sided banter with John that led to him losing a £20 note. Have no fear, Duncan was recompensed.
The highlight for my daughter was getting picked to help on stage with a trick which culminated in a chocolate egg which she gleefully accepted. The show is packed with impressive magic tricks, the most amazing of all was the disappearing chocolate egg. 'Help! My Supply Teacher is Magic' is a lovely way to spend an hour over the Easter weekend.
