Editor's Blog: Theatre fans call Whats On Stage Awards "utter shambles" and "regret voting"

Mel C & Tim Minchin
The annual Whats On Stage Awards took place on Sunday evening (17th February 2013). The Awards were announced at a star-studded concert ceremony, hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Rufus Hound at the Palace Theatre in the West End. Stars including Mel C, Tim Minchin, Sheridan Smith and Natalie Casey performed alongside other nominees and stars of shows including The Bodyguard, Top Hat, Wicked, Spamalot and Soho Cinders.

On Sunday evening I asked people what they thought of the Whats On Stage Awards on the West End Frame Twitter page and I received quite a response!

It seemed people were offended by the language used by hosts Mel Giedroyc and Rufus Hound and didn't think they were appropriate for the (what should be) prestigious event. Theatre fans also thought the event seemed rushed, disorganised and very unprofessional, some calling it "an utter shambles" and saying they regretted voting. Many people were also upset that the online live-streaming didn't show the performances due to copyright issues. Here is what theatre fans had to say:

"It's tacky, full of bad language, disorganised... I switched off."

"I watched about 10 mins, thought it was chaotic and ridiculous so I switched off. I regret voting now."

"Gave up a while ago, it was terrible! Such a shame because I am an avid theatre fan so thought I would enjoy them."

"I'm just following who wins on Twitter now. It's rubbish, rude and just a big farce!"

"It is only 7.30pm and the language is dreadful. The whole thing is very disorganised and an absolute embarrassment to the nominees. I'm very angry!!"

"Total shambles - a complete car crash"

"It's just not what it should be, doesn't suit theatre, BRIT Awards maybe, but not theatre."

"Wanted to watch friends collect awards but I have a family and the language is appalling!!!"

"It does no justice to the talented, creative and, above all, professional people who are nominated. They deserve better."

"It should be a prestigious event but it's an absolute shambles."

"Do not bother watching it! Shocking language and just a complete shambles. I've turned it off. I never imagined that the presenting and organisation could be so appalling. It's just not taken seriously at all"

"I've turned off and resorted to Ghostbusters!!"

"The sound quality of the live-streaming is poor and I am surprised about the amount of swearing."

I only received one positive comment from a lady who was actually at the event. She said " I'm in the audience, row F and it's hilarious. Loving it."

Lets hope Whats On Stage listen to your comments and makes some improvements next year!
