West End Stars David Hunter and Julie Atherton will star in The Hired Man which runs at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester between 21st March - 6th April and the Curve Theatre Leicester between 12th - 27th April 2013.
Acclaimed for its epic, nostalgic, funny book and rousing, romantic, award-winning score, The Hired Man is arguably the finest new British musical of the last thirty years.
Set against the backdrop of the Cumbrian lakes in the early years of the twentieth century, it tells the timeless, moving story of a young married couple and their struggle to carve a living from the land, just as the traditional rhythms of English country life are being swept away by the gathering storm of war in Europe. It’s haunting, thrilling, stirring stuff.
Now the Mercury Theatre’s new Artistic Director Daniel Buckroyd has reassembled the creative team behind his critically-acclaimed 2008 touring production of this wonderful show, which captivated audiences throughout the UK before transferring to New York.
The Hired Man is based on the much-loved novel by Melvyn Bragg, and brought to life by the heartbreakingly-beautiful music of Howard Goodall, the EMMY, BRITand BAFTA award-winning composer of stage musicals including the recent West End hit Love Story, and film and TV scores including themes for Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley, Mr Bean and QI.
David Hunter recently starred as Horton the Elephant in Seussical at the Arts Theatre. David trained at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and graduated from the Acting course in 2006. During his time at LIPA, and seeking a musical outlet, David joined a local band and began writing and recording original music. But what started as a bit of fun, suddenly became a full time commitment, when the band were signed and immediately set to work creating their debut album. Recorded with the producers responsible for The Rolling Stones and The Who, the album eventually led to huge support slots, playing alongside The Feeling, Scouting For Girls and finally McFly on their full UK arena tour. During this time, David fronted the band as they performed in front of 200,000 people in every major arena in Britain. After completing their own headline tour, the band decided to call it a day. David returned to acting. He appeared in new musicals Pub and Spinach at The Royal Exchange in Manchester, before joining One Man, Two Guvnors at The National Theatre and its transfer to he Adelphi Theatre.
Julie Atherton is currently starring in Lift at the Soho Theatre. She played Sister Mary Robert in last years UK Tour of Sister Act. Julie's West End theatre credits include Kate Monster in the original London cast of Avenue Q, Serena Katz in Fame and Sophie in Mamma Mia!.
