Review: Midnight Tango at the Phoenix Theatre

Midnight Tango
Phoenix Theatre
Reviewed on Tuesday 5th February 2013 (Press Night)

Midnight Tango is spectacular. There is something very special about watching a story unfold through dance. On several occasions many audience members, including myself, were left open mouthed as the cast features some of the finest tango dancers in the world. This mesmerising show, set in a late-night bar in downtown Buenos Aires, takes you on an explosive journey full of excitement.

Midnight Tango's storyline may be simple and predictable but it does not matter in the slightest as Karen Bruce's direction, along with Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace's choreography, tells the story beautifully. Vincent and Flavia also star in the show, leading the cast with grace and class. Flavia is not only technically out of this world but when she performs I could not take my eyes off her. A stand out moment was when Vincent and Flavia were left alone on stage with only a pianist. The dance was enchanting and left me utterly speechless. It was a privilege to watch two stunning dancers perform before my very eyes.

Russell Grant was cast as Carlos, reuniting him with his Strictly Come Dancing dance partner Flavia Cacace. However, after a nasty injury involving some black ice just a week into rehearsals, he is currently unable to perform. He made a lovely speech before the show started and I wish him a speedy recovery. Russell's understudy, Anthony Renshaw, performed to perfection and along with the divine Tricia Deighton as Rosa provided some light relief.

The on-stage band were brilliant and Morgan Large's design of the late-night bar in downtown Buenos Aires is spot on.

Anybody who has any sort of interest or passion for dance will watch Midnight Tango and think they have died and gone to heaven, the show is a real treat. Dance is becoming increasingly popular as a result of television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Got To Dance, therefore it is only right that Midnight Tango has once again returned to the West End. If only it could stay for longer...

Midnight Tango runs at the Phoenix Theatre until Saturday 2nd March 2013.
