Shrek The Musical is one of the best family friendly musical comedies I have ever seen. With a hilarious script, an impressive set and a catchy score, not only will kids leave with big grins on their faces, but parents will too.

Unlike other shows aimed at children, Shrek is not in your face and patronising. There are plenty of jokes for the parents which will go straight over children's heads. Jeanine Tesori's original score is perfect for the show. As expected there are plenty of upbeat catchy numbers, but surprisingly there are also a couple of stunning ballads, such as Who I'd Be and the reprise of Big Bright Beautiful World, which allow leading man Dean Chisnall to show off his outstanding vocal talents.

The ensemble, who play a variety of magical fairytale creatures, help carry the show and keep it alive. One of my favourite moments was the ensemble number Freak Flag which showcases the West End at it's very best.

Carley Stenson leads the cast with grace and power. She has mastered her feisty portrayal of Princess Fiona. Her voice has a lovely unique tone and she sings the score perfectly. Neil McDermott, who is perhaps best known for his stint in Eastenders, is hilarious as Lord Farquaad. Neil had a tough act to follow as Nigel Harman previously won an Olivier Award for the role. However, Neil has made the role his own and is equally as funny as Nigel. He deserves an award purely because he has to do the whole show on his knees!

Unfortunately I was disappointed with Richard Blackwood as Donkey. I constantly wanted more from him as he seemed to be making little effort. Also I thought the Donkey costume was poor. Shrek looks like an ogre, Princess Fiona looks like a princess, but Donkey looks like someone going to a fancy dress party.

Shrek is nothing but fun and makes the perfect family treat. Unfortunately the show is closing on Sunday 24th February 2013 so make sure you see it while you still can!
