Keith Jack first appeared on our TV screens back in 2007 when he was the runner up in the BBC's Any Dream Will Do which was watched by over 10 million people. After the show, Keith was asked to join the touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat which has travelled the length and breadth of the UK. New and exciting projects followed thick and fast including numerous TV and radio appearances, albums, tours, pantomime and even his own stage school.
Earlier this week I caught up with Keith to talk about starring in Joseph, his dream roles and favourite West End Shows...
You are currently playing the title role in the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, are you enjoying it?
I am absolutely loving it! I'm really pleased with the way it all worked out. I think Lee (Mead) was always going to win Any Dream Will Do. I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to have that gap between coming second and taking on the role.
Why do you think that after all these years the show is still so popular?
Joseph is completely timeless and it has almost become a tradition for school children to go and see the show as well as parents who saw it when they were a child, taking their children to see it. It’s such a great family show.
What are the cast like to work with?
Great! I have been with the show through three or four cast changes now and everyone has been amazing, we have lots of fun on tour.
Do you like touring?
Yes, to a certain extent. For a while I didn't even have a flat whereas now I do so I love coming ‘home’, even if it’s just for a couple of days a week. As long as I have somewhere where I can cook I don’t mind. It’s fun touring because you get to experience so many different audiences.
What’s your favourite song in the show?
Close Every Door and there’s also this stripped back section of Any Dream Will Do which I love.
Do you have fond memories of being a contestant on Any Dream Will Do?
I do, it was so fun all living together in the house and of course having the opportunity to work with the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Denise Van Outen and John Barrowman. I’m actually still in contact with John, he gives me advice so still acts as a mentor. I'm really glad I came second because I feel like I’ve had the chance to mature before taking on the role of Joseph.
What are your dream roles?
When I am older I would love to play the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera. I would also like to play Marius in Les Miserables.
Have you had the chance to see the film yet?
Yes, it’s amazing! Eddie Redmayne is great as Marius and I loved Samantha Barks as Eponine. It’s amazing to think that the show originally opened to bad reviews and look where it is now!
What were the first shows you saw whilst growing up?
I think the first show I ever saw was Phantom and I remember seeing Joseph a couple of times.
What advice would you give to any aspiring performers?
My biggest advice is to train because that’s something I missed out on. It gives you three years of stability and there is only so much you can learn on the job.
What are your favourite shows at the moment?
That’s a hard one! I saw Ghost a while ago with Mark Evans which I loved. I have next week off before we start rehearsals for Joseph and I'm seeing Rock Of Ages, Singin’ in the Rain and a play at the National – I can’t wait!
What would you like to say to everyone who has supported you throughout your career?
I sometimes think it would be amazing if I could put on a big thank you concert for all my fans! Thank you so much for coming to my shows and for all your support on Twitter. I always try to stop at the stage door for as long as I can because it’s so nice to meet everyone... thank you!
