The Arabian Nights
Tricycle Theatre
Reviewed on Thursday 6th December (Press Night)

"In Baghdad, a young woman starts a revolution through the power of storytelling. For three years, King Shahryar has taken bloody vengeance against the women of his city, marrying a new bride every night and killing her in the morning. Scheherazade is determined to stop the bloodshed using the only weapons she has – her wit and imagination. Night after night, the King’s newest bride weaves tales of seduction, silliness and suspense. How long can her stories save her?"
Often theatre relies on celebrity casting, fancy flying sets and dazzling costumes. The Arabian Nights strips everything back and takes you back to the roots of theatre. It relies purely on storytelling.
The Arabian Nights is a special show and makes the perfect alternative family outing this Christmas. The show is for those with vivid imaginations. From beginning to end, The Arabian Nights is thoroughly engaging and explores many human emotions before your eyes.
The design of the show is perfect. It is simple and carefully compliments the story. It is impossible to mention stand out performances from the cast as they work as an ensemble throughout. Every single spoken word is said with intent and reason.

The Arabian Nights takes some interesting twists and turns. For example I did not expect the company to burst into song about a fart. While it was amusing I felt it was just a silly song slotted in for easy laughs. Having said that it demonstrates that there is something for all the family.
The Tricycle is a lovely little modern theatre and the perfect venue for The Arabian Nights. There is a friendly atmosphere inside the Tricycle which makes your evening even more enjoyable.
If you only like shows which are big, bright and colourful then I am afraid The Arabian Nights is not for you. However, if you want an engaging evening full of imaginative storytelling and pure delight then you must book your tickets now.
The Arabian Nights runs at the Tricycle Theatre until 12th January 2013.
