"Hot on the heels of their enthusiastically received adaptation of Molière’s The Miser (Kanjoos) and building on the success of the sell-out smash hit of 2011’s panto Bollywood Cinderella, Tara Arts conjure up another seasonal treat with music, melodrama and multi-coloured magic, this time with Dick Whittington Goes Bollywood. All the fun of panto meets the glitz of Bollywood in this Christmas show with a difference."
If you want a change from the normal pantomime, Dick Whittington Goes Bollywood is the show for you. It is everything you would expect from a pantomime plus a bit more. The show is a hilarious Bollywood adaptation of the classic story of Dick Whittington and contains a variety of songs which have been re-written by Farrukh Dhondy who has done a splendid job. Let's just say I never thought I would hear a Bollywood version of Gangnam Style - but it worked and I was pleasantly surprised!
The audience lapped up the jokes and fell in love with the talented cast. Stand out performances came from Antony Bunsee who is hilarious as the Dame and Sam Kordbacheh (pictured below) who makes the perfect pantomime villain.
At some points Dick Whittington Goes Bollywood becomes slightly too ridiculous. The show started off slow. By the end of the first half I was still not convinced, but thankfully the second half was smoother, fast paced and, most importantly, funnier.
The Tara Theatre provides a unique pantomime experience like no other. The intimate theatre creates a friendly atmosphere. You can't help but feel involved in the show and you are guaranteed to leave the theatre smiling.
