Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Warner Bros film, this brand new musical of The Bodyguard, with book by Alex Dinelaris is unmissable.

“Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love. A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features a multitude of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits.”

The show starts with a bang – literally. A loud gunshot caused immediate silence in the audience. The Bodyguard is an exciting show, with a storyline which is more gritty than your stereotypical, cheesy musical.

Heather Headley shines as Rachel Marron. When I closed my eyes it could have been Whitney Houston performing on stage. However, I admire the fact that Heather performed her own interpretation of the role. Debbie Kurup, who plays Rachel’s sister, also gave an outstanding performance. When she sang alongside Heather they cast a spell over the audience.

Lloyd Owen gave a good performance as bodyguard Frank Farmer. However, I felt something was missing. His portrayal seemed slightly shallow and I wanted more from him.

I had the pleasure of seeing Britain’s Got Talent finalist Malaki Paul as Fletcher, Rachel’s 10 year old son. His stage presence is impressive for someone so young and I wish his part was bigger. Malaki clearly has an exciting career ahead of him.

Tim Hatley's set and costume design is remarkable. The ensemble were strong, their high energy carried the show, particularly during the finale which was spectacular. The entire audience were up on their feet singing and dancing. The atmosphere was infectious and left many audience members singing and dancing on their way out of the theatre.

The Bodyguard doesn't just appeal to Whitney Houston fans. It brings something new to the table and stands apart from the rest. Be prepared to laugh, be entertained and have a great night out.
