Review: Medea at the Watford Palace Theatre (UK Tour)

Medea (UK Tour)
Watford Palace Theatre
Performance: Wednesday 18th October 2012 (Evening)

Her husband’s gone and her future isn’t bright. Imprisoned in her marital home, Medea can’t work, can’t sleep and increasingly, can’t cope. While her child plays, she plots her revenge. This startlingly modern version of Euripides’ classic tragedy explores the private fury bubbling under public behaviour and asks how a mother, fuelled by anger at her husband's infidelity, might be driven to commit the worst imaginable crime.

Usually when a show ends the actors take their bows, the audience applaud and then leave the theatre. However this was not the case with Medea. When the house lights came on after the performance ended the Watford Palace Theatre was filled with an incredible buzz. The atmosphere was electric and I have never experienced anything quite like it.

Rachael Stirling was outstanding as Medea. There are so many questions which are left for the audience to answer. Is Medea just an ordinary person? Is she a witch? In fact I couldn't even decide whether I thought she was a good or bad person.

It was so interesting to see a modern version of such an old Greek play. If you know the play well you will find it fascinating to see how it has been updated by the incredibly talented Mike Bartlett, but if you are not familiar with the play you will still get completely sucked into the gripping and unpredictable storyline.

Throughout the play I became emotionally engaged however I found the ending so over dramatic that it had little effect on me. Without giving the ending away it should have been extremely powerful but I felt like it was just too much.

Medea is a powerful play with some hilarious moments. I would strongly recommend Medea, the whole cast are terrific. I would love to see the show transfer to the West End next year.
