Review: 'Celebrity Night At Café Red' at Trafalgar Studios

'Celebrity Night At Café Red'
Trafalgar Studios 2
Performance: Friday 21st September 2012 (Press Night)

Saturday Night at Café Red, the frenchest chain restaurant in town, with plastic onions, checked tablecloths and rustic provencal paraphernalia to prove it. But this is a night of change, of fresh ideas – visiting Celebrity Chef Extraordinaire Roly Ryan is in the kitchen whisking up trouble. How can he know his diners have also brought their own unusual ingredients to the table?

The show is described as an evening of love, awkwardness, danger and mime. This sums up the show perfectly as the show is indeed full of love, awkwardness, danger and mime. Lily Bevan's script is genius, the jokes do not stop coming. A minute didn't go by without an audience member bursting into fits of uncontrollable laughter.

However there seemed to be something missing, something didn't feel right. I think I have to put it down to some of the actors who seemed slightly wooden throughout the show. Lily Bevan has created ten huge characters who need to be played by massive character actors, but I felt some of the actors could have given a little bit more.

Fred Machin and Alys Metcalf quite simply stole the show with their incredibly clever mime sequences. It got to the point where I could not imagine how they could get any funnier... but then they did. Mime is extremely interesting to watch and we need more of it in the West End!

Lorna Beckett and Sarah Lambie also stood out from the cast. They got their characters spot on and were hilarious throughout.

Celebrity Night At Café Red is about as contemporary as it gets, there were even a few Olympic jokes slotted in. It was refreshing to watch such a fresh, relatable play.

If you want a fun night out, full of laughs, you really should head down to Trafalgar Studios. Please visit www.trafalgar-studios.com to find out more and to book tickets.
