Review: Educating Rita at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Educating Rita
2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival
George Square Theatre
Performance: Thursday 23rd August 2012

Educating Rita has been a controversial show at this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival due to the fact it stars two well known actors. However I do not have a problem with this at all. I love the fact that one minute you can be watching an exciting new play starring amazing, fresh, unknown, talented actors and then the next you can watch two experienced actors take on a beautiful Willy Russell play - how exciting!

Educating Rita is written so beautifully by Willy Russell. Matthew Kelly and Claire Sweeney certainly do it justice. Matthew Kelly, who I last saw on stage last year in 'Lend Me A Tenor', has great power on stage. His portrayal of Frank is spot on. He also plays a great drunk!

Claire Sweeney gives an endearing performance, you can't help but fall in love with Rita. Both actors attention to detail is outstanding and it is really like watching a master-class in acting. The story is intense and it is interesting to watch two characters go on two massive journeys.

This special play is not to be missed!
