Review: Music Box - The Improvised Musical at the Shaw Theatre (part of the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival)

Music Box - The Improvised Musical
Part of the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival
The Shaw Theatre
Performance: Sunday 5th August 2012 (evening)

I was looking forward to seeing Music Box - The Improvised Musical as I found the idea of a bunch of actors making up a musical on the spot extremely exciting. However I knew it would either be amazing or terrible. The performance began with one of the cast members addressing the audience and asking for ideas. After much discussion the audience decided they wanted the musical to be set in a sexual health clinic and for the musical to be called 'Sex The Musical'. The show hadn't even begun and I was already speechless.

I was greatly impressed by the quick thinking of the actors. They all worked incredibly well together and had great chemistry. I loved the way they used physical theatre in a light hearted way to create comedy. The only let down was the standard of the singing which was consistently out of tune and at some moments unbearable to listen to. This made me feel like I was watching an amateur production. If I had seen 'Music Box - The Improvised Play' this review would probably have been a 5 star review as the acting and comic timing was all spot on.

At some points I could not stop laughing and could not believe what I was watching. It was outrageously funny. For me Charlotte Gittins stood out for her portrayal of a sexual health doctor. I do not know how she managed to keep a straight face!

I would recommend that you see this show if you like seeing different types of theatre and want a light hearted night out. Expect the unexpected! Music Box's limited season at the Shaw Theatre has now finished but you can catch the show at venues including Hoopla Improv Comedy Club and 7 on Red Comedy Club over the coming months.
