Jennifer Holliday joins Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple on Broadway!

Aaaand we are telling you... that Jennifer Holliday is back in town!

The Broadway diva, who originated the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls, is taking over as Shug Avery from Heather Headley in The Color Purple.

Holliday will play her first performance at New York's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 4th October, after Headley leaves on 2nd October. Jennifer Hudson, who played Effie White in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, originated the role of Shug in this production. Holliday previously played Sofia in The Color Purple's 2014 U.S. tour. She was last seen on Broadway in 2001 when she starred in Chicago.

Holliday says: "I was deeply moved by this truly uplifting production of The Color Purple. I am highly honored and absolutely thrilled to be joining this extraordinary cast. Nothing compares to performing before a Broadway audience and I can't wait to return to the Broadway stage, where I started my career over 35 years ago.”

She joins Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks as Celie and Sofia as well as Isaiah Johnson as Mister, Joaquina Kalukango as Nettie, Kyle Scatliffe as Harpo and Patrice Covington as Squeak.
