Review: The Sound of Music at the Leicester Curve Theatre

Marking Paul Kerryson's final show as Artistic Director of the Curve, The Sound of Music is absolutely glorious. It is visually stunning, the score is sounding better than ever and the cast bring something new to the piece.

Every time I see a production of The Sound of Music I am reminded of just how iconic almost every single scene is; to pick a favourite moment would be virtually impossible. Rodgers and Hammerstein's score is simply heavenly, during some songs it is challenging not to sing along.

Laura Pitt-Pulford's performance really surprised me as I have never seen anyone play Maria so differently. She has impressively reinvented the character, bringing out different qualities. Pitt-Pulford's portrayal is as playful as you would expect, but she also brings depth. She seemed to be having the time of her life during the scenes with the children and her vocals cannot be faulted.

Michael French makes a strong Captain Von Trapp whilst Lucy Schaufer is phenomenal as Mother Abbess. Her rendition of 'Climb Every Mountain' is nothing short of sensational. The children who play the Von Trapp family steal the show, bringing so much life and passion to proceedings.

Throughout his time as Artistic Director of the Curve, Paul Kerryson has certainly proved that he knows how to stage a classic! He stays true to the original whilst adding his own stamp. Over the past year I found his productions of Chicago and Hairspray refreshing, and The Sound of Musical also hit me like a breath of fresh air.

Choreographer Drew McOnie yet again showcases just how diverse his talents are. The short bursts of dance throughout are stunning; I particularly enjoyed seeing what he's done with the number 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen'. The orchestra sounded divine and, although I was disappointed that they're hidden away during the performance, I was absolutely thrilled when they took to the stage to bow at the end.

When The Sound of Music was staged at the Open Air Theatre last July it made the perfect summer treat, but the show is even more special and magical at Christmas. The Sound of Music seems to be cheesier than ever, but this production captures its spirit perfectly. Leicester is well and truly alive with The Sound of Music.
