The Rose Theatre Kingston has announced its 2015 season which features two new in-house productions with passionate take on William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet directed by Sally Cookson and a new co-production of David Hare’s The Absence of Warwith Headlong and Sheffield Theatres that sees Headlong Artistic Director Jeremy Herrin direct.

Romeo + Juliet reunites the creative team behind the Rose’s co-production of critically acclaimed West End transfer Hetty Feather.Olivier-Award nominated director Sally Cookson collaborates once again with composer Benji Bower to bring their bold and dynamic approach to the most beautiful and passionate of Shakespeare’s plays.
The Absence of War directed by Jeremy Herrin, whose recent work includes Wolf Hall/Bring up the Bodies (RSC), The Nether(Headlong/Royal Court) and This House (National Theatre), will tour the UK from February until completing its run at the Rose in April. A prophetic and incisive study, Hare brilliantly captures an epic personal struggle against the high-pressured hysteria of the 1992 General Election with Reece Dinsdale as Labour leader George Jones. Dinsdale's theatre and TV credits include This House (National Theatre) and Coronation Street.
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds presents two productions for Kingston this season including Sign of the Times and Jerome k Jerome’s classic Three Men in a Boat. Written by award-winning comedy writer Tim Firth (Calendar Girls) and originally commissioned by Alan Ayckbourn, Sign of the Times explores the power of words and dreams in our changing world.
Northern Broadsides return to the Rose after their award-winning An August Bank Holiday Lark which played in Kingston last summer. Jonathan Miller will direct William Shakespeare’s King Lear with Northern Broadsides Artistic Director Barrie Rutter in the title role.
The Rose also features John Boyne’s best-selling novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas live on stage this season as part of its first national tour that includes the world premiere in Chichester this coming February. Produced by The Children’s Touring Partnership, who have previously toured Goodnight Mister Tom (which won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family) and Swallows and Amazons.
Edward Hall’s theatre company Propeller are back with Pocket Comedy; a sixty minute version of Propeller's acclaimed production of The Comedy of Errors which was performed at the Rose last March, as well as in theatres around the globe. Pocket Comedy is specifically aimed at young people and first-time theatregoers.
The family programme includes Room on the Broom and Stick Man based on the books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea, the world's leading Bubbleologist Louis Pearl as The Amazing Bubbleman and improvisational musical adventure group The Fantastical Story Factory.
Other season highlights include and inter-galactic a cappella phenomenon Voca People, Mischief Theatre Company’s Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Fascinating Aida: Charm Offensive, sell out comedy festival hit One Man Breaking Bad, Stewart Lee’s new stand up tour and The Comedy Store residency returns.
Plus hear music from Grimethorpe Colliery Band and The Demon Barbers.
Summer highlights include Ignition Dance Festival from 2 – 7 June, produced by the Royal Borough of Kingston Arts Service with support from many partners, including BalletBoyz, the festival aims to raise the profile of dance in Kingston through commissioning, training and performance opportunities. International Youth Arts Festival will return from 3 – 19 Jul.
