Confirmed: Matt Smith to star in Almeida's American Psycho, full casting announced

It has been confirmed that Doctor Who star Matt Smith will lead the cast as Patrick Bateman in the upcoming stage adaptation of American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre. 

The production, which opens on 12th December (previews from 3rd December) and runs until 25th January 2014, is a musical version of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial novel about a self-possessed serial killer working on Wall Street in the 1980s. American Psycho was also famously adapted into a 2000 film starring Christian Bale.

Matt will be making his musical theatre debut in Rupert Goold's production. Rehearsals for the show begun today (7th October). American Psycho is composed by Tony and Olivier-Award winner Duncan Sheik with a book by playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa .

The cast also includes: Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.

Matt Smith is in his fourth and final year playing Doctor Who in the cult BBC TV show. His performance as the youngest ever ‘Doctor’ has won him international acclaim and a BAFTA nomination. His last appearances will be the 50th anniversary episode in late November and the 2013 Christmas special. 

His theatre credits include: That Face at the Royal Court and in the West End, On the Shore of the Wide World, Burn, Citizenship, Chatroom and The History Boys all at the National Theatre, Fresh Kills at the Royal Court and Swimming with Sharks in the West End. Matt is soon to appear opposite Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes in the film How To Catch A Monster written and directed by Ryan Gosling. He made his directorial debut earlier this year with Cargese, a short film for Sky Arts, written by Simon Stephens.

Set design is by Es Devlin, costume design is by Katrina Lindsay, with choreography by Lynne Page, lighting by Jon Clark, musical direction from David Shrubsole, sound by Paul Arditti and video by Finn Ross.

If the initial run is a secess there are already plans for West End and Broadway transfers.
