Michael Ball becomes the latest celebrity to play God in Spamalot

Theatrical legend Michael Ball has kicked off the new season of Celebrity Charity Gods in the West End production of Spamalot at the Playhouse Theatre. Other celebs who have filmed the short cameo role and will appear in the musical over the coming weeks include: Professor Brian Cox, Greg Dyke, Robert Lindsay and Gary Lineker.

Over the summer God was played by the likes of Michael Palin, Hugh Bonneville, Barbara Windsor, Larry Lamb, Bradley Walsh, Simon Callow and Christopher Biggins. God, usually played by Eric Idle, features in Spamalot when King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table are given their quest to find The Holy Grail.

‘The Spamalot Charity Gods’ has been created to raise-a-lot of shillings for several charities including Headley Court Rehabilitation Centre, The Make A Wish Foundation, the Great Ormond Street Hospital, Scene & Heard, Stage For Age, Action for Stammering Children, Keats Community Library, The Royal Theatrical Fund, Acting For Others and Freedom From Torture which are supported by the stars who are playing God.

Press material states 'as the former Director General of the BBC and now Chairman of the F.A. (that’s Football Association, not the other F.A.) Greg Dyke is also perfectly placed to be God, while Professor Brian Cox is so used to staring at the Heavens, that it’s not much of a leap for him to play God on screen in Spamalot. And with Gary Lineker being a God of Football, Robert Lindsay being a God of screen and stage and Michael Ball being a God of Musical Theatre, then they are all more than qualified to look down on King Arthur from the Heavenly clouds too.'

Sir Howard Panter (producer of Spamalot for Ambassador Theatre Group) said: “It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to bring friends of the show in to the role of God in this way, so that we can help such deserving causes while making audiences laugh at the same time.”

Spamalot currently stars comedian and actor Les Dennis as King Arthur and musical theatre legend Bonnie Langford as The Lady of The Lake. Other stars who have appeared as King Arthur include Joe Pasquale, Stephen Tompkinson, Jon Culshaw and Marcus Brigstocke.

Michael Ball can be seen playing God until Saturday 26th October. Gary Lineker takes over on 4th November. Further dates will be announced soon.

Spamalot is currently booking at the Playhouse Theatre until 8th February 2014.
