Review: A Chorus Of Disapproval at the Harold Pinter Theatre

A Chorus Of Disapproval
Harold Pinter Theatre
Performance: Saturday 6th October 2012 (Evening)

'The Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society’s production of The Beggar’s Opera is going off the rails, that is until a handsome but shy young widower Guy joins the group. An instant hit with the company’s ferociously zealous director Dafydd and the show’s leading ladies, including Dafydd’s wife Hannah, Guy soon gets more than he bargained for as he discovers that all the best action happens off-stage. Classic songs fill the air as the drama on stage is mirrored by the romantic rivalry and small town squabbles causing a stir in the wings of this ambitious local show.'

Everyone was overcome with excitement when it was announced that Rob Brydon would be making his West End debut, and he certainly does not disappoint. Rob is a natural character actor and demands the audiences full attention each time he is on stage. His comic timing is spot on and at some points during the show left a few audience members howling, uncontrollably, with laughter.

However for me it was Nigel Harman who completely stole the show. I had forgotten what a versatile actor he is. Playing Guy Jones could not be more different from Lord Farquaad, who he recently played in Shrek The Musical. Nigel's attention to detail was fascinating to watch. Sometimes comedies can be full of 2D characters with no depth but Nigel played Guy Jones with endless layers.

Daisy Beaumont also stood out from the cast. Her portrayal of Fay Hubbard, a flirtatious character who hosts swingers parties, was incredibly funny. The scene where she invited Guy to one her 'parties' was pure comedy gold.

The cast consists of a strong ensemble full of weird and wonderful characters. Robert Jones's design is  extremely impressive and  while some scenes were lengthy and the story became predictable, this revival of A Chorus Of Disapproval is definitely a huge success.

I would thoroughly recommend this play to anyone wanting a light hearted, fun evening.
