Chariots Of Fire
Gielgud Theatre
Performance: Wednesday 5th September 2012 (Matinee)

The last time I went to the Gielgud Theatre it was to Lend Me A Tenor. However, as I walked into the auditorium my jaw dropped as the stage was unrecognisable. The design of this show is incredible and extremely clever, creating the perfect atmosphere.
I loved the way the show started with the actors coming on stage to warm up while the audience finished taking their seats. Usually I am against this kind of thing but I felt in this case it really added to the atmosphere. Obviously this show is perfectly timed with the London 2012 Olympics which gives it an extra special buzz.
I wasn't expecting the play to have such a focus on music and choreography, but both were stunning. I loved watching Simon Slater, the Musical Director, who is possibly one of the most theatrical people in showbiz.
The story is good however there is so much going on that I felt it didn't always flow and became disjointed. I don't think you have to be a sports fan to get into the story and relate to the characters. The cast were all strong both individually and together as an ensemble. Some of the visual images that the cast created as an ensemble were extremely powerful.
If you love seeing completely different types of theatre than you must see Chariots Of Fire. I can't say that I have ever seen anything quite like it.
