Soul Sister
Savoy Theatre
Performance: Thursday 30th August 2012

There is nothing I hate more than watching cringey, forced acting and I feared this would be the case with Soul Sister. However, I am delighted to say that I was completely wrong...
Soul Sister is a brand new musical is inspired by the life and times of Ike and Tina Turner and features all the classic Tina Turner hits, including: What’s Love Got to Do With It, Proud Mary, Private Dancer, River Deep Mountain High and of course Simply the Best, as well as many more. The band were amazing and deserve a lot of credit for giving the show that extra spark.
The story follows the highs and lows, passions and heartbreak, of Ike and Tina as their careers soared and their marriage crumbled. I found the storyline fascinating. I could tell how engaged the audience became in the story as there were endless laughs, gasps and cheers from the audience throughout.

Emi Wokoma is incredible as Tina Turner. She plays the role perfectly. I cannot get over the vocal stamina she must have to sing the way she does 8 times a week. The power of her voice sent shivers down my spine. She also acts the role beautifully. My personal highlight of the show was when she sung 'Help'. She showed the audience the vulnerable side of Tina Turner which I think surprised a lot of people. I am sure it will not be long until we see
Emi Wokoma back on a West End stage.
I found some of the design choices strange. It was completely unnecessary to project the scene location onto the back drop. Audiences are not stupid and don't need projections, stating things such as 'meanwhile in the office...', to work out where a scene is set. I found it patronising and distracting from the scenes. I also found the scene changes confusing as there were projections on the back wall that I didn't have time to read as there were pieces of set crossing the stage which got in the way.
The show has a great party atmosphere and makes a great night out.
You can catch this show at the Savoy Theatre until 29th September 2012 before it begins a UK tour. Visit www.atgtickets.com/shows/soul-sister to find out more and to book tickets.
