Interview: Amy Lennox, Soho Cinders & 9 to 5 The Musical UK Tour

Amy Lennox is currently playing Velcro in Soho Cinders at the Soho Theatre and later this year will star as Doralee in the UK tour of 9 to 5 The Musical. Amy's theatre credits include Decade for Headlong, Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden for Birmingham Rep and Margot/1st cover Elle in the original West End production of Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy Theatre. Her film credits include Jen in Never Let Me Go for DNA Films and Amy’s television credits include Wrong Turn Five for WT5 Productions. Amy talks to West End Frame about Soho Cinders, how she's looking forward to life on the road with 9 to 5 The Musical and what it was like to recently join the Legally Blonde UK tour to play Elle Woods again...

Everyone has been raving about Soho Cinders, why do you think people love the show so much?
It's a fun, silly show but is surprisingly heart warming to. I think the audiences are surprised it has that kind of content. The music is just wonderful - Stiles and Drewe really know how to write catchy tunes. We've heard people singing the songs as they leave!

How similar is the show to Cinderella?
It's sort of a 'gay' version of Cinderella but with more to it - it would be a bit dull to keep it the same I think. There's a few themes that it plays with such as affairs, being true to yourself and how love can free us or in some cases trap us!

Do you enjoy playing Velcro?
Velcro is your buttons character in essence and is such a fun part to play - I get a bit of everything - great songs, funny lines and some really sensitive emotional moments - I love her! The Staines accent was new to me so I had to work on that one!

What are the rest of the cast like to work with?
The cast are all lovely - we get on very well and I can say that with complete confidence as we have crammed ourselves into the Soho Theatre between 2 dressing rooms, working in very close proximity with one another (sometimes too close!) and there's been no serious dramas... not yet ayway ;-)

You recently joined the Legally Blonde UK Tour in Aberdeen to play Elle, the role you understudied in the West End. What was it like revisiting the character?
It was surreal at first - it had been almost 2 years! I wasn't sure how much I would remember but it turned out Elle Woods was engraved on my brain! I had the best time with the touring cast - I was only there for 2 weeks but they made me more welcome than I could ever have hoped for - I love the lot of them!

After Soho Cinders you will play Doralee in the UK tour of 9 to 5 The Musical, tell us more!
I literally start rehearsals the day after we finish Soho Cinders! No rest for the wicked! Dolly Parton has written two new songs for our production and the script is being re-written so I'm very intruiged and excited to get stuck in! And I cannot wait to meet the legend herself!

Are you looking forward to life on the road?
I have never toured before and I've been told weekly touring is tough. Our one day off a week includes travelling to the next venue, which in some instances can be hours away... but never the less it will be brilliant to go to towns and cities all over the country that I've never been too - I'm looking forward to it!

Are there any other roles that you would like to play in the future?
Not specifically! I like new challenges and I like to keep my work varied - so that means focusing on non musical theatre from time to time... This business is fickle so making sure I do everything from films to musicals to plays to telly is an important aim for me. In terms of musical theatre however I am gagging to do a Sondheim... one day!

Finally what would you like to say to everyone who supports you?
I'm always very touched by the lovely messages from people. There's some people that see me in everything I do - sometimes travelling miles to the venue - it's just lovely! So to all my lovely supporters... thank you so much and see you at 9 to 5 hopefully! xxxxxxxx
