Review: 13 at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival

13
2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival
C Venues
Performance: Friday 24th August 2012

I wasn't sure what to expect as I walked into C Venues to see 13. The show tells the story of 12-year-old Evan Goldman who is having a difficult time - his parents are in the midst of a divorce and his all-important Bar Mitzvah is on the horizon. To make matters worse his mother announces they are leaving New York and moving to the quiet town of Appleton, Indiana.

I was blown away by the talent of Stafford Gatehouse Youth Theatre - not one kid struggled or fell behind the rest. Each and every member of the cast seemed to love every second which is what makes this show stand apart from the rest and left me walking down the streets of Edinburgh with an extra spring in my step.

Tom Slade was just incredible. He acted the part of Evan so naturally and sung so beautifully that I had to keep reminding myself I wasn't watching a West End Star. I could listen to Holly Musgrave's soulful voice all day and she took the audience on each and every step of Patrice's journey. Dan Toney's portrayal of Archie was extremely clever. He managed to find the perfect balance between comedy and creating sympathy meaning he had the audience on his side throughout. I was slightly scared of Abbie Venables. She was fantastic at playing the villain in the show 'Lucy' and I couldn't believe how powerful her voice was!

I wish I could mention each and every cast member by name - they were all amazing. Especially all the soloists.

The plot of 13 is clever. I greatly enjoyed the story. There were some truly hysterical moments where I could not stop laughing. I urge you to see this amazing show while you still have the chance. It is uplifting and funny yet still has depth. All of the cast are strong and it is in a wonderful Fringe venue. You would be crazy not to see it.
